The Bible and the Reformation

This is another question which came up during the Catechetical Institute course on Scripture, when we considered the different attitudes to the Bible among Catholics and Protestants.

We consider what the Catholic Church was like before the Reformation, and why there was such a cry for ‘reform in head and members’. We look at Martin Luther’s repugnance at the sale of Indulgences, his increasing critique of the Pope and the Church, the polemical debates between Luther and his critics and Luther’s excommunication.

Then we move on to look at John Calvin, in the next, more radical, generation of Protestants. We briefly consider the settlement of the Thirteen Colonies in the USA by different Christian groups, and finally the (much delayed) reforms of the Council of Trent.
